Blog Software: The Novice Blogger’s Best Friend
The Internet blog has become the means by which thousands of budding writers are indulging in self-expression without having to worry about finding a publisher. And thanks to blog software, even the technically challenged among us can join the blogging community.
People write bogs for a variety of reasons: to record the ups and downs of their daily existences and their interactions with family and friends; to express their political leanings; to review, endorse, or sell products; to offer information on topics in which they are particularly interested; or to tutor their readers. If you have an interest, there is almost certainly a blog related to it, and if there’s not, you can be the first to start a new blogging topic!
Because so many public figures, including athletes, entertainers, politicians, authors, and even professional journalists are now blogging, the issue of libel in blogging is becoming more prevalent. Blogging content is almost impossible to regulate, and while you can certainly blog on anything you find of interest, you have a responsibility to verify your statements of fact, especially when you are discussing other people. Otherwise you will be doing nothing but creating controversy, and could experience some extremely negative consequences.
If you decide you still want to go ahead with a blog of your won, first decide what sort of blog you would like. Will your blog be a place in which you record your life passage, so that your loved ones can keep up with how things are progressing? Or will it be a place where you can simply record your thoughts as they occur, or write about one of your passions?
Some people restrict their blogging to a single topic, on which they post in great detail. These blogs are the equivalent of magazines, and often have product reviews or interviews with experts in the related field.
Internet marketers have found blogs to be excellent marketing tools. Many companies have turned to blogging either as a way of branding their products to an audience of consumers, or as a way to build community among their employees by keeping them current on what is going on within the company.
Blogging software, although many web design professionals scoff at the idea of needing it, is ideal for someone new to blogging who wants to build a blog which looks different from the ones available on the free Internet blogging platforms. The best blogging software packages have been engineered by experts and include all the features which a web designer could offer.
The difference is that it would take a web designer an enormous amount of time to build a blog with all the features instantly available in a good blogging software package. And a web designer’s time is your money.
Most blogging software will allow you to maintain your log online with a browser-based interface, which lets you update your blog with the same software you are using to view it. Some blogging software, however, includes a special tool with which you will update your blog through a PDA of internet-connected workstation.
Look for blog software which will allow your readers to comment on your posts, which will allow you to categorize your posts according to their subject matter, and which have a trackback feature, linking your blogs to any other sites which reference your posts. That way, readers of other blogs and websites can find your blog without having to do a search.
Your blogging software should also allow you to add links from other blogs and websites to your blog, and to include TSS, or Real Simple Syndication feeds to your blog. Both these features are essential if you want to get your blog before as wide an audience as possible.
With blogging software, you’ll be able to let the program do the work of building and altering the blog structure, while you do the work of writing the blog’s content. Getting your writing published on the web is why you want a blog in the first place, isn’t it?
